WHO IS LAUNCHING THE POLLUTED AIR ALARM

In Europe, people die from constant exposure to toxic substances.
In the Po Valley the most polluted air in Europe

According to the report “Air quality in Europe. Report 2018 "of the European Environment Agency of Copenhagen (EEA), in the Old Continent, 3,9 million people live in areas where the limits of the main air pollutants are constantly exceeded. Of these, the staggering 95% live in Northern Italy.

Above all due to the particularly critical situation in the Po Valley, our country is in first place in Europe for the number of deaths from nitrogen dioxide (20.500 victims) and ozone (3.200) and in second place - only Germany is worse - for deaths caused by Pm2.5 pollution (60.600).

In Italy, in 2015, exposure to particulate matter caused the premature death of 422 people. In addition to the indirect damage deriving from the compromise of resources and ecosystems, the data underline how pollution from particulate matter, ground level ozone and nitrogen dioxide decreases life expectancy, causes or aggravates respiratory problems, favors cardiovascular diseases, contributes to the onset of different types of cancer.

A silent epidemic, which is inexorably taking its course and which does not spare the little ones. The report "Air pollution and child health: prescribing clean air", prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the occasion of the first Global Conference on air pollution and health (Geneva, 30 October - 1 November 2018), it is clear and inexorable: 93% of children under the age of 15 are exposed to levels of fine dust higher than those required by the guidelines on air quality. The WHO also calculates that in 2016 600 children died due to respiratory infections caused by poisons in the air and even in this case, unfortunately, Italy stands out in the negative, with 98% of children exposed at too high levels of ultra-fine powders.

The industrial processes most responsible for the deterioration of air quality are mainly those related to combustion, responsible for carbon monoxide emissions, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, Pm, etc. However, there are many other critical processes in the world of industry and crafts and the pollutants emitted are the most varied (solvents, acid mists, metal powders and much more…). In the industrial field, emissions are highly regulated and for this reason industries must use systems for abatement of pollutants which vary according to the pollutants themselves.
