Air pollution. OMS launches alarm!

November 11, 2019

In Europe dies for the constant exposure to toxic substances.

In padana plain the most polluted air in Europe

According to the report “Air Quality in Europe. Report 2018 “of the European Environment Agency of Copenhagen (AEA), in the Old Continent 3.9 million people live in areas where the limits of the main air pollutants are constantly exceeded. Among these, the staggering 95% percentage lives in Northern Italy.

Especially because of the particularly critical situation in the Po Valley, our country is in first place in Europe for number of deaths from nitrogen dioxide (20,500 victims) and ozone (3,200) and in second place- Germany is only worse- for deaths caused by pollution from Pm2.5 (60.600).

In Italy, in 2015, exposure to particulate matter led to the premature death of 422 thousand people. In addition to the indirect damage caused by the impairment of resources and ecosystems, the data underline how particulate pollution, ground-level ozone and nitrogen dioxide decrease life expectancy, cause or aggravate respiratory problems, promote cardiovascular disease, contribute to the onset of different types of cancer.

A silent epidemic, which is inexorably taking its course and which does not spare the little ones. The “Air pollution and child health: prescribing clean air” report, prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the occasion of the first Global Conference on air pollution and health (Geneva, 30 October – 1 November 2018), it is clear and inexorable: 93% of children under the age of 15 are exposed to levels of fine dust higher than those required by the guidelines on air quality. The WHO also estimates that in 2016, 600,000 children died due to respiratory infections caused by poisons in the air, and even in this case, unfortunately, Italy stands out in negative, with 98% of children exposed at too high levels of ultra-thin powders.

The industrial processes most responsible for the deterioration of air quality are mainly those related to combustion, responsible for the emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, Pm, etc. But there are many other critical processes in the world of industry and craftsmanship and the pollutants emitted are the most varied (solvents, acid mists, metal powders and much more …). In the industrial field, emissions are highly regulated and for this reason industries must use pollutant abatement systems that vary according to the pollutants themselves.
